Engineers at War describes the experiences of engineers in support of combat operations and carrying out construction in a distant theater. “The performance of United States Army Engineers in Vietnam, “wrote General Harold K. Johnson, the Army chief of staff, “adds another brilliant chapter to their history.” The building effort in South Vietnam from 1965 to 1968 allowed the United States to deploy and operate a modern 500,000-man force in a far-off undeveloped region. Although the engineers faced enormous construction responsibilities, the Army’s top priority remained providing combat support to tactical operations. As a result, ground combat troops with their supporting engineers were able to fight the enemy from well-established bases, which gave U.S. and allied forces the ability to concentrate and operate when and where they wanted. Although most of the construction was temporary, more durable facilities—including airfields, port and depot complexes, headquarters buildings, communications facilities, and an improved highway system—were intended to serve as economic resources for South Vietnam. The military engineers who supported the U.S. Army in Vietnam wrote a proud record of achievement that spanned nearly two decades of war. Starting with a handful of advisers in the mid-1950s, Army engineers landed in force with U.S. ground units in 1965 and before long numbered more than 10 percent of the U.S. Army troops committed to the fight. Working in one of the world’s harshest undeveloped regions, and under constant threat from an elusive and determined foe, the engineers met every test that came their way. They built ports and depots for a supply line that reached halfway around the globe, carved airfields and airstrips out of jungle and mountain plateaus, repaired roads and bridges to clear the advance for the combat infantryman, and constructed bases for an army whose communications grew in complexity with each passing year. They were often found in the thick of the fighting and fought as infantrymen as part of a long tradition of fighting while building. When the U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War began to wind down, the engineers were given another demanding mission, imparting to the South Vietnamese Army their specialized skills in construction and management. They left in place a robust infrastructure to support the South Vietnamese as they vainly struggled for survival against the armored spearheads of the North Vietnamese Army. Engineers at War is the eleventh volume published in the United States Army in Vietnam official series. Like its companion volumes, it forcibly reminds us that the American soldier in Vietnam was courageous, infinitely adaptable, and tireless in pursuit of the mission. For the engineers, that mission and their comrades sustained them, in the best engineer tradition, even as the political and popular will to sustain the fight diminished. Their story and dedication should inspire all soldiers as they face a future of sustained operations around the world.

This is NOT a reader friendly book if bought for a Kindle!!! The index at the back is total confusion and if you find a reference to a unit - not easy - the page reference is useless as there are no links and the page numbers are deleted in the publication. The footnotes are scattered throughout the text, to the extent of splitting paragraphs and even sentences, making following a single thought a real slog. Even the formatting of the text is a shambles in places. The editor should have been busted to PFC.On the other hand it has good, helpful photos throughout.

The information I have searched for since I served in South Viet Nam in 1967 was found in this book. The little support group I was with in Duc Pho supported several larger infantry units, but nothing was ever written about us. This book describes the building of all the supports bases in Viet Nam, even Duc Pho in 1 corpes. It describes who where when and how. This is a large book that's just full of information. Thanks!
Good recall of the events in Vietnam. I could see just about what was going on during my tour in country along with all the running around we did.

I would like every soldier who served in WW I, WW II, Korea or Vietnam it was the Grunts who had to meet the enemy, I would like you to know that the term "Just Engineers" loses a little in translation, you should purchase this book, every time you traveled by road, were located on a fire base, crossed a bridge, had a cleared LZ, the Engineers were probably there, we supported your every move. I didn't read the book, but I gave it to my dad for Christmas. He's kind of obsessed with his Army Corps of Engineers days in Vietnam now that he's getting older. My dad is not a reader & I can't remember ever seeing him read a book for pleasure, but he loved this book and read it in under 48 hours (and it's a substantial book). He seemed very excited that there was a book out there just for his "crew," and was genuinely emotionally moved to read about places & events he thought everyone else had forgotten about. This book would make a great gift for any Army Corps of Engineer, active or veteran.
Really a fascinating look at the Corp of Engineers during the Viet Nam War! I have read somewhere that only 1 American soldier out of 8 or 9 was in active combat. This book seems to confirm that (My Dad was in a Transportation Company in '65 and '66, never fired a shot. My Uncle was in a Infantry Company a year or two later, He fired his weapon almost daily and does not like to talk about it). Its almost beyond understanding how much the Engineers did during the War. One unit would build or repair a bridge. Another unit somewhere else would blow a bridge up!
Finally a book that tells the story of the Combat Engineers in Vietnam. Every CBT Engineer should read this book and pass it on so that others know what we endured as support troops for most of the named operations in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. It leaves a question as to why Combat Engineers who build with one hand and carry a rifle at all times with the other, never received anything that indicated that "We Were In Combat" right along with the 101st, 173rd, Speecial Forces at every major battle in the Central Highlands. They were Infantry and if in battle they received the Combat Infantryman's Badge and individual awards.
Combat Engineers received nothing but individual awards. When we came home, if you didn't have a CIB, it was difficult to get VA benefits for PTSD. They still have not recognized us for our service with a similiar badge as the CIB.
A very detailed look at what Engineers did in Vietnam.
This a long book filled with facts and names that are golden to those who served but may not be as interesting to anyone who wasn't "in country".If you did serve you will probably find names of projects, companies, equipment and locations that you know very well.
Adrian Trass has done a great service to the engineers who served in Vietnam by writing about the work they undertook. Parts of the book are very interesting, explaining new methods and techniques invented by the engineers to combat problems resulting from the lack of normal construction supplies and equipment, hostile actions, the need to be air mobile, or the need to build quickly under difficult conditions. It is really amazing how things can get done when it is a really important or life threatening situation.
