I really like Andre Norton. I started reading her in high school and never stopped. I even remember the first book by her I ever read—Time Traders. I reread that recently and found it held up pretty well. Today my favorites are stories of High Hallack. They feature heroines who have agency, intelligence and courage. This book is no exception. Gillan opts for adventure over security and nearly loses her life when she trades places with a young women, one of twelve plus one promised to men who came to the aid of her country in time of war. Their bargain is women for wives in exchange for their help. Gillan sees the distress of the young women, and offers to take her place. She finds more than she bargained for in the man she she is matched with.If I had one complaint, it would be that the book finished too soon. Since it is part of a series, I hope to meet Gillan and Herrel again.

Original Witch World series is awesome. Andre Norton's writing style is second to none. Have loved this book since I discovered it in the early 80's in middle school.
First book by Andre Norton, I ever read, but not my last. Been waiting for kindle versions for awhile. Hopefully, I will be able to finally have the complete works. Looking forward to reading all of them again and again.
Although the characters that made the first two novels come alive are not present, this story is as engaging as those. Simply a great writer moving along a time line in a world that I found to be mesmerizing.
I enjoyed listening to this audio edition of one of my favorite Norton Witch World books. Kate Rudd has a pleasant voice and does a fine job of reading it. I've read it myself many times but there is something very soothing about listening to someone else read aloud. There are enough reviews here explaining what the book is about so I won't bother with that. My only complaint is the cover.....it looks like something from a romance novel (and I am not dissing romance novels.) The story does have a bit of romance between the leads, but not in the usual sense. I always liked the Witch World books when I was growing up because the male and female leads worked together as a team of equals and back in the time period when these came out that was something seldom seen.
I am no expert reviewer. All I can say is you can't go wrong with Andre Norton. I just wish was more consistent with carrying all of the various series she wrote. There are books missing in virtually all of her longer series
Yes, it's a fantasy novel about witches and shape-shifters penned by the Grand Dame of Science Fiction. Yes it's full of adventure and magic and the journey of a heroine coming to full knowledge of her own strength and self-worth through the use of magic. But it's also the story of two misfits thrown together in an arranged marriage and how they turn themselves into an unstoppable team. The way the hero and heroine have each other's backs in this story almost spoils all other romances.
Buy it for the adventure, but the growth of the central relationship is something we almost never see in this genre and it makes this novel truly remarkable.
(Review by the Mrs., not the Mr.) Read this when it first came out decades ago and really liked it. It's YA science fiction/fantasy, although the science fiction part is hidden from those unfamiliar with the series. HINT Many of the inhabitants were originally from other worlds whether or not they actually know it, and some of their truly foreign enemies are from a much higher technology-level. At least some of the locals have a few tricks of their own so they can fight back, which is why the series is called, "Witch World". We aren't talking cauldrons and potions, here. Please read it for yourself -- and enjoy!
I usually read books nowadays on an older Nook Color, but although other books in the Witch World series are available in that form, including one sequel to this called the "Jargoon Pard", this book was nowhere to be found except as an ancient paperback. It's worth the inconvenience if you're a fan of the late, great Andre Norton. She started writing back when female science fiction and fantasy authors were not only few and far between, but generally disguised themselves with a masculine pen name, BTW. Editors thought only men and boys would be interested in either reading or writing this sort of thing. She was one of the first to write Young Adult fiction, and while she considered herself a "very staid and old-fashioned teller of tales", this former librarian from the Library of Congress in Washington, DC wrote some great adventure stuff. In this book, her main character is different from the others because she is darker amidst the fair, from a different part of the world, and has different mental abilities. Other characters of Norton's in other books are different("outsiders" or "misfits") in a variety of ways, sometimes disfigured or handicapped, physically or socially. Norton was practically unique in that her characters weren't all lily-white. Her Native American characters (try "Beast Master" for example) are also well worth reading.
