The Laches is a Socratic dialogue written by Plato. Participants in the discourse present competing definitions of the concept of courage. Lysimachus, son of Aristides, and Melesias, son of Thucydides, request advice from Laches and Nicias on whether or not they should have their sons trained to fight in armor. After each gives their opinion, Nicias for and Laches against, they seek Socrates for counsel.

This dialogue takes upon itself to discuss the nature of courage. Though the dialogue ends in approach (as so many of the early dialogues do), many interesting arguments are provided for and against Nicias' definition. They approach defining courage in the same way as Holiness in Euthyphro, virtue in Meno, and friendship in Lysis which lends insight to Plato's method of universal definition. It is worth reading this dialogue even to compare to his later dialogues on definition (such as Sophist), but the dialogue takes a bit longer than necessary to develop the "setting". For this reason, if one is interested in the method of universal definition, then I recommend reading one of the more concise dialogues noted above (of which Euthyphro is the most concise).Product details

A very interesting discourse on definitions of virtue and courage.
A very interesting discourse on definitions of virtue and courage. Although Socrates and two prominent visiting generals could not come to an agreement on this matter, the whole discussion was highly philosophical and mentally stimulating.
